She wants to try buying on <a href="http://ebay.com/">eBay</a>, but she is hesitant to put her trust in <a href="http://paypal.com/">Paypal</a>, as it requires linking into your bank account.<br /><br />The problem is that eBay’s current payment system leave buyers with few options. With eBay’s new rules, sellers are not permitted to advertise their willingness to accept alternate payment options on their actual eBay listings. However, sellers can still accept checks or money orders for payment if a request is made by the buyer.<br /><br />While I did not explain that option in my response to Cyndi below, for those uncomfortable with Paypal it could be worth a try as well.<br /><br /><blockquote style="color: rgb(0, 51, 0);"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDnuGHU5h8H2qRu-bs2yrC_3KH27vkpZZLSvMJzO6jE9UYwlrvunaA1GfcKXVLWkPl5dLEUVmPg2Cd4qQf5f9ee7x6NHWGGK7zDTL6_UHla2GxFUFCEkw9mOb-fBhgT65W9VoCUoMq9VvP/s1600-h/paypl.gif"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 260px; height: 193px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDnuGHU5h8H2qRu-bs2yrC_3KH27vkpZZLSvMJzO6jE9UYwlrvunaA1GfcKXVLWkPl5dLEUVmPg2Cd4qQf5f9ee7x6NHWGGK7zDTL6_UHla2GxFUFCEkw9mOb-fBhgT65W9VoCUoMq9VvP/s320/paypl.gif" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5262628332929251298" border="0" /></a>Hello Karen,<br /><br />I was glad to find your blog. I'm starting to learn more about antiques and antiquing.<br /><br />I'm interested in purchasing some items on ebay, but I don't want to be involved in pay pal or anything that would connect to my bank account. Do you know of anyone or any businesses that will do the purchasing for you on ebay? Or do you have any suggestions for someone like me who doesn't want to take financial risks like pay pal?<br /><br />Thank you for your time.<br /><br />-- Cyndi<br /></blockquote><div style="text-align: center;"><br />----------------<br /></div><br /><blockquote><span style="color: rgb(0, 51, 0);">Hi Cyndi,</span><br /><br /><span style="color: rgb(0, 51, 0);">While some eBay sellers may have the capability to accept credit cards themselves, Paypal is really the way to go if you want to buy or sell on eBay. Don’t you hate that?<br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />And then there’s the issue of people who have tag sales and never remove their old signs... These things can be awfully frustrating for us bargain hunters!<br /><br />I recalled the general directions, but not the specific street name... We never found the sale, but it was a lovely ride through Woodstock on a colorful Autumn morning. Living in the Quiet Corner of Connecticut, we often overlook things to do and see just beyond our own backyards. Such was the case with the charming country tea house we discovered, situated just beyond the Woodstock Fairgrounds.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRApCD16lUbhPaIAkfnLlZ21yoQJMBmMu2FW0huORR0vWgZOCzKpxpcQpsSB0cIRjrV0MA0XcUA23Us58yG-O7qt0EJXhoUy-sE0KuhtPVfuLELvpqyBhHEMQ-14-godvhjuGTVJz5Mwvb/s1600-h/232630861957.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRApCD16lUbhPaIAkfnLlZ21yoQJMBmMu2FW0huORR0vWgZOCzKpxpcQpsSB0cIRjrV0MA0XcUA23Us58yG-O7qt0EJXhoUy-sE0KuhtPVfuLELvpqyBhHEMQ-14-godvhjuGTVJz5Mwvb/s400/232630861957.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5262227279949082642" border="0" /></a><br />One one side of the dirt lot is a picturesque little country store selling fudge, candy, dried herb mixtures, a few antiques, cast irons pans, and handcrafted wisk brooms. On the other side there is an inviting tea house featuring a gift shop of all things tea-related, and a very pretty sitting area offering a variety of sandwich wraps, fresh pastries and teas of all imaginable kinds! Auction and classified-ad sites are prime territory for fraud. People who need the money are most vulnerable.<br /></div><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-consumer26-2008oct26,0,2025856.story">Read more about this news story</a> | <a href="http://digg.com/business_finance/With_a_tough_economy_more_online_sellers_more_scams">Digg this story</a><br /></div><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">However, such problems are not restricted to merchandise sales online. I recently experienced reason for caution while job searching on Craigslist.<br /><br />I noticed some positions listed in various categories of jobs and all of these similar ads listed rate of pay considerably higher than one might expect such a position to pay. Some of these ads seem extremely appealing. Then, once you email a resume, a reply is sent back asking you to complete an application online. Even at this point, the name and location of the company offering the job is not revealed. Yet, the online application you are asked to complete does request lots of personal information — including your social security number. Be careful!<br /><br /><span style="color: rgb(255, 255, 204);">...</span><br /></div><b>Bargain Avenues</b>http://www.blogger.com/profile/14352511272942975060noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4572737739202158559.post-64744454414791390022008-10-23T06:55:00.007-04:002008-10-23T07:25:15.495-04:00Former Lego employee used company credit cards to buy collector toy sets and resell them on eBay<div style="text-align: justify;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBCkxOWLWrNNCB1mhd9pQrfF8P6GPaU606gr4EJq0UIskZ4zzEDLQ-0BMzcGdO6UwqMp4zIdccKv9xr3P42nFGeeTxrapSQUl6LrRvjN1p86RTMqBxmUpcOmGXb8JYEY_Dt04_ku2bUbA4/s1600-h/legofal.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBCkxOWLWrNNCB1mhd9pQrfF8P6GPaU606gr4EJq0UIskZ4zzEDLQ-0BMzcGdO6UwqMp4zIdccKv9xr3P42nFGeeTxrapSQUl6LrRvjN1p86RTMqBxmUpcOmGXb8JYEY_Dt04_ku2bUbA4/s320/legofal.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5260307125644317378" border="0" /></a>In April, <a href="http://www.lego.com/en-US/default.aspx">Lego officials in Enfield, CT</a> received a call from a man who told them he was a reseller of <a href="http://www.lego.com/en-US/default.aspx">Lego products</a> on <a href="http://www.ebay.com/">eBay</a>. He claimed he had recently purchased a <a href="http://shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&_trksid=m38&_nkw=Lego+Star+Wars+Millennium+Falcon">Lego Star Wars Millennium Falcon</a> toy set on eBay and that there was a packing slip inside the box from the company’s “<a href="http://shop.lego.com/Default.aspx">Shop at Home</a>” division addressed to the eBay seller — who turned out to be an employee of Lego.<br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />The original cost of the item on the slip revealed a much lower price than his cost for similar products. He wanted to know how he could purchase such items at the lower price.<br /><br />His inquiry touched off an investigation which revealed the seller’s improper use of her company credit card.<br /><br />According to an affidavit, Linda Hegarty, 46, said she was overwhelmed by bills. She admitted to purchasing and reselling about $4,688 worth of Lego products on eBay between March and April. However, company officials told police that further investigation revealed she had been using her company credit card to make improper purchases since 2002.<br /><br />Looking at the prices some of these sets can bring on eBay, it’s probably not too surprising that this is not the first time a Lego employee has been in such a situation...<br /></div><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWZXTG-DU3CqoakP_DRBRn6EH0GibTK_qRL1nranWzZp78ZeEZRZ8cwfwxP8plo-TZizBWOfJqjb7jCQFsH4t7RXaXClI39HQeln_-mHwKAAW9aRXTeBvmDpvfsERkkMK3zDZreGpU6EL4/s1600-h/legoauct.gif"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 206px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWZXTG-DU3CqoakP_DRBRn6EH0GibTK_qRL1nranWzZp78ZeEZRZ8cwfwxP8plo-TZizBWOfJqjb7jCQFsH4t7RXaXClI39HQeln_-mHwKAAW9aRXTeBvmDpvfsERkkMK3zDZreGpU6EL4/s400/legoauct.gif" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5260303961404795698" border="0" /></a><br /><span style="color: rgb(153, 0, 0); font-weight: bold;font-family:arial;font-size:85%;" >Completed auction prices show that these sets can bring close to $600 each on eBay!</span><br /></div><br /><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">In 2006, three former Lego employees stole thousands of dollars worth of Star Wars-themed Lego sets while working at the Enfield distribution center and selling them on eBay. Lots of chatter here among dealers and those in the auction business too. It was a super-busy place this morning over at <a href="http://www.openlist.com/brooklyn-ct_salvation-army-thrift-store/392114463/"><span style="font-weight: bold;">The Salvation Army Store in Brooklyn, CT</span></a>. With two check-out lines going at once, it’s evident that more and more people are on the lookout for alternative ways to save money these days.<br /><br />Every day features a discount on items with certain color tags, but on Wednesday, most everything (with few exceptions) is half price at this store location for their Family Day special.<br /><br />These were the early-birds shopping during my visit today, and some of them were a little pushy... While I was surprised at the number of people sharing aisle space, I was also somewhat dismayed at the rudeness of a few. I guess people can get anxious when the prices are cut in half and every item is one-of-a-kind.<br /><br />I scored at the checkout with 15 items that came to a grand total of $25!! Some of the brand names of clothing I purchased include: Abercrombie, Lands End, The Children’s Place and Disney. The average price per item: $1.66<br /></div><br />Not too bad!<br /><br /><span style="color: rgb(255, 255, 204);">...</span><b>Bargain Avenues</b>http://www.blogger.com/profile/14352511272942975060noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4572737739202158559.post-81501544763122487262008-10-14T15:48:00.000-04:002008-10-14T15:31:51.419-04:00Swap Meets: Hottest buying opportunities for auto enthusiasts this fall<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifjbazDp1J81VEPFhAJU1qEafoW_jiTHqSUXyyMHW4ibXfjIfNChSJvXVkgzrx_3exy2wApgXBlIA6KWxVe5Xw9Ak16Uailfl7ErDVFmTiROpb1G0x3UGdEw0bIikoeMau1FAgI9DaBSHA/s1600-h/2008TYRODSFALL.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifjbazDp1J81VEPFhAJU1qEafoW_jiTHqSUXyyMHW4ibXfjIfNChSJvXVkgzrx_3exy2wApgXBlIA6KWxVe5Xw9Ak16Uailfl7ErDVFmTiROpb1G0x3UGdEw0bIikoeMau1FAgI9DaBSHA/s400/2008TYRODSFALL.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5257054481022174594" border="0" /></a><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">What will get a guy out of bed at before dawn on a chilly Autumn weekend morning? This has to be the most beautiful event of the year — it’s one I always look forward to attending!<br /><br />Obviously, there is art to be seen and sold, and artists of all kinds to meet. In addition -- there is a huge variety of creative arts and crafts on display, food and music, a fantastic library book sale and church and home yard sales too!! Add to all that, stunning scenery surrounds you, and for those who enjoy people-watching, it’s incredible! Not only people galore, but so many pet owners take this event as an opportunity to show off their dogs. I’ve saw a real assortment -- from pretty little fluffy ones with bows in their hair to others that looked downright dangerous.<br /><br />This year, all three days were bright and beautiful!! I made my visit today along with my four-year-old daughter, Katelyn. The long walk to and from our parking spot was great exercise for us both — although lugging all of the books I could gather from the library sale was a bit challenging on the way back to the car for me! Katelyn did super with all the walking, but as you might expect, within five minutes of being strapped into her seat, she was fast asleep for the ride home!<br /><br /><br /></div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjp1_XjaVjfeBNgeVv5gZyvZp50pKkLekqLVimVyzZXkW0zlMFSDEaE7dAeS4scCBVK5OsX6MEQx3QKUfmZxdsAPAM41lS9yHw-aQF8cOXmgB4E6eTYQBh565rBQpEg2QtYxJ8yFTY6T7NB/s1600-h/S7300783.JPG.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; There was the usual assortment of pre-owned household goods, clothing spread out on tarps over the lawn, and boxes overflowing with stuffed animals of all kinds...<br /><br />But they also had a great selection of old music CDs — some of the songs brought back memories of sounds I enjoyed from the past, but I hadn’t heard in a long, long time!<br /><br />Such was the case with <span style="font-weight: bold;">Carly Simon’s Greatest Hits Live</span> album. I’ve always loved the sweet smoothness of her voice. I picked out that CD from a pile where it was amid so many others. (I have to say, the assortment at that yard sale was incredible!)<br /><br />I spotted the Itsy Bitsy Spider song on the list. Knowing how much Katie loves to sing along in the car with me, I thought here was a great opportunity for her to hear it done a little differently — not your typical nursery rhyme rant! I gladly put out the dollar — not only to revisit reminiscent songs of way-back-when for me — but to involve my daughter in a fun musical experience we could both share in together.<br /><br />Sure enough, as I pushed the button to hear track number 10, Katie had the words down pat! She chimed in as soon as the spider part came on. Katie even asked me to play it again, making for a happy car ride as we continued on our way to the zoo!<br /><br /><br /><center><b><a href="http://noolmusic.com/videos_2/carly_simon_itsy_bitsy_spider_music.php">Carly Simon Itsy Bitsy Spider Music</a> via <a href="http://noolmusic.com/">Noolmusic.com</a></b><a href="http://noolmusic.com/"><br /><object height="350" width="420"><param name="movie" value="http://noolmusic.com/play_dailymotion/x3ofuq"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"><embed src="http://noolmusic.com/play_dailymotion/x3ofuq" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowscriptaccess="always" height="350" width="425"></embed></object></a> </center><br /><br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);font-size:130%;" >I hope she’ll remember singing along in<br />the car with Mom when she is older!</span><br /></div><br />It reminded me of the sing-along songs I most enjoyed with my older kids when they were little... Here’s something different. For the first time in nine years, the state of Rhode Island is holding a public auction of unclaimed property.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhp_n5Vb0U6VBppx0ESr5O8zyfhoMfPvN3rTBm39pdaJX86KjH04RX49gN5O5DP90eWakWD3HakwaeDNT_pFKoSSbShaIdi-EthNWRbiz7eMmeBUrWbUp5SDTUI2hE54Ly5JTaJM8ja-3ml/s1600-h/sterling.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhp_n5Vb0U6VBppx0ESr5O8zyfhoMfPvN3rTBm39pdaJX86KjH04RX49gN5O5DP90eWakWD3HakwaeDNT_pFKoSSbShaIdi-EthNWRbiz7eMmeBUrWbUp5SDTUI2hE54Ly5JTaJM8ja-3ml/s320/sterling.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5252014013795455074" border="0" /></a>Unclaimed property consists of money and other assets that are considered lost or abandoned after an owner cannot be located for a specific period of time. This auction includes gold and silver coins, old paper money, and gold and sterling silver rings, bracelets, necklaces and pins. There will be sports cards and stamp collections. But the highlight of the event is expected to be a three-handle sterling silver Tiffany Trophy Cup from 1898.<br /><br />These items will be displayed in the conference room on the 2nd floor of the <a href="http://www.admin.ri.gov/">Administration building</a>, located at One Capitol Hill, Smith Street in Providence. Public viewing of the auction items is scheduled for Thursday and Friday evenings from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Saturday, October 4th from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.<br /><br />The auction will take place on Saturday, October 4th at 10 a.m. and it’s all over when everything has been sold.<br /></div><br /><br /><a style="font-weight: bold;" href="http://www.ri.gov/press/view.php?rss=1&id=7103">Treasurer Caprio Announces State's First Unclaimed Property Auction in 9 Years</a><br /><br /><span style="color: rgb(255, 255, 204);">...</span><b>Bargain Avenues</b>http://www.blogger.com/profile/14352511272942975060noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4572737739202158559.post-61383356483839193332008-09-30T10:06:00.008-04:002008-10-01T00:20:53.855-04:00A shoreline landmark: Saybrook Lighthouse may be auctioned<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcQvBqgX-uPCZnFE2U4qXJPSWshHbjD2TocDQQl2TAFH-71WNtfm9x7dMgQwdKHYNzr3MgDVkUQP1wBSq0Bz-6EpJ1VaWftz6KbL51t4beUPVXoEZnm4KRaNi5gbl9vskraBqJREKS8wT4/s1600-h/saybrook2b.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcQvBqgX-uPCZnFE2U4qXJPSWshHbjD2TocDQQl2TAFH-71WNtfm9x7dMgQwdKHYNzr3MgDVkUQP1wBSq0Bz-6EpJ1VaWftz6KbL51t4beUPVXoEZnm4KRaNi5gbl9vskraBqJREKS8wT4/s400/saybrook2b.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5251816358243722386" border="0" /></a><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">Because of the high costs involved for maintenance and upkeep of historic lighthouses, an amendment to the <a href="http://www.cr.nps.gov/maritime/nhlpa/nhlpa.htm">National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act in 2000</a> makes it possible for private citizens to bid for eligible lighthouses at auction. As part of the amendment, lighthouses are offered first to to state or local governments or non-profits for free. But if no group or agency comes forward to take over ownership, public auctions have become an option.<br /><br />Now there is news that a Connecticut shoreline landmark, the <a href="http://www.courant.com/community/news/mr/hc-lighthouse0929.artsep29,0,2137695.story">Saybrook Outer Light, may be auctioned</a>.<br /><br />Apparently, maintenance on the 122-year-old lighthouse (located at the end of a half-mile-long jetty at the entrance to Old Saybrook Harbor) has become too costly for the Coast Guard. The lighthouse was placed on the auction block on May 23, 2006. The winning bidders, Jon and Juli Chytka of South Dakota, paid $165,000 and were required to negotiate a "submerged lands" lease with the state Coastal Resources Management Council.<br /><br />Juli placed the winning bid from a cafe in Paris, France. Her husband, a lieutenant colonel in the Army was deployed in Iraq at the time. As the property is on the National Register of Historic Places, the new owners must adhere to strict guidelines in any restorative work. That lighthouse is located near Bristol and Portsmouth and can be viewed from the Mount Hope Bridge.<br /></div><br /><br /><a href="http://www.cr.nps.gov/maritime/nhlpa/nhlpa.htm">National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act of 2000</a><br /><br /><a href="http://home.comcast.net/%7Edebee2/ri/HogIsland.html">New England Lighthouse Wallpaper</a><br /><br /><a href="http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2008-04-01-lighthouse_N.htm">Coast Guard auctions off lighthouses</a><br /><br /><a href="http://blogs.courant.com/itowns_mr/2008/09/saybrook-breakwater-lighhouse.html">Saybrook Breakwater Lighthouse an auction item?</a><br /><br /><span style="color: rgb(255, 255, 204);">...</span><b>Bargain Avenues</b>http://www.blogger.com/profile/14352511272942975060noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4572737739202158559.post-2434556192393418982008-09-26T07:01:00.004-04:002008-09-26T07:09:51.288-04:00It’s the season for yard sales!<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOnUWuF_q8hTeKBxA4B5VlmSlgs9ggCmIwSwbG5UDc4ZZcqOgGiYgWI_D-fx80ToehvZEviSeTGDQfdxoixWPL2CG3OYqepQB_B2HCpTvqypg1-6CD_GDNCgTY5WWFUkrZLSM4mk9Sao9E/s1600-h/foliage.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOnUWuF_q8hTeKBxA4B5VlmSlgs9ggCmIwSwbG5UDc4ZZcqOgGiYgWI_D-fx80ToehvZEviSeTGDQfdxoixWPL2CG3OYqepQB_B2HCpTvqypg1-6CD_GDNCgTY5WWFUkrZLSM4mk9Sao9E/s400/foliage.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5250284465326962994" border="0" /></a><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">Warm sunshine and crisp breezes, colorful surroundings and the crinkle of leaves underfoot, Fall is my absolute favorite time of year. What better way to spend a weekend morning to enjoy it all than to hit up a few yard sales around town?<br /><br />This weekend is packed with great opportunities to hunt out bargains. My pick for the Plainfield area is the Sunny Brook Neighborhood Yard Sale. Streets included are: Park Avenues, Easy Street, Spring Street, James Street, Robin Road, Linda Lane, Ann Street, Birch Street and South Pine Street. It takes place September 27th and 28th from 8 am to 2 pm.<br /><br />While you’re out and about, why not check out the Fall Festival at <a href="http://www.plainfieldcatholic.org/">Plainfield Catholic School</a> on Railroad Avenue? There will be fun activities for the kids and raffles galore for everyone and proceeds support the school!<br /><br />Other big yard sales will be happening this weekend in Danielson, East Killingly, Brooklyn, Pomfret, Woodstock and North Grosvenordale! You can explore the Quiet Corner and take in the best of features of the season too.<br /><br /><br /><span style="color: rgb(255, 255, 204);">...</span><br /></div><b>Bargain Avenues</b>http://www.blogger.com/profile/14352511272942975060noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4572737739202158559.post-29678920531208734732008-09-19T06:45:00.001-04:002008-09-19T08:42:34.760-04:00RI State Checks: Insufficient Funds!<div style="text-align: center;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqHJBmBcD7CRjToDnA4qZNOUO8YJpwGaZKn2bkQXu7dd5MqH19y-w1NqLRaRbHdY6jDnCqZue_6YJf8fBzDEE90WlIw6HUQ9Ym02T-h4zoRY0tGxK8tlROjLDnVfj2Obngfjh-NkVZ_B6c/s1600-h/hoperi.png"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqHJBmBcD7CRjToDnA4qZNOUO8YJpwGaZKn2bkQXu7dd5MqH19y-w1NqLRaRbHdY6jDnCqZue_6YJf8fBzDEE90WlIw6HUQ9Ym02T-h4zoRY0tGxK8tlROjLDnVfj2Obngfjh-NkVZ_B6c/s400/hoperi.png" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5247481346815709890" border="0" /></a><span style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(204, 0, 0);font-size:85%;" >Rhode Islanders: You can always "HOPE" for the best...</span><br /></div><br /><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">Signs reflecting the effects of a tightening economy are happening all around us. Yesterday was my first time selling at an event like this, the 4th Annual Mammoth Moosup Neighborhood Yard Sale. My sons helped for three straight days in preparation, setup and sales. We’re doing it today too!<br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />I had more stuff out on the front lawn than I ever realized I had in storage! Because of the overnight rain, we waited to set up very early on Saturday. It was still dark outside.<br /><br />I had three big tables and 4 shelving units for displays, plus numerous bins positioned throughout the selling zone. As expected, a few early birds showed up before we were really ready, and as the crowd came upon us, I wasn't even set up completely. And while I wasn’t able to leave my post for more than a minute here and there, a couple of runs back into the house, and I realized there were a few forgotten items that didn’t quite make it outside for starting time.<br /><br />The crowd was heavy & steady up until 2:00 or so. I sent my boys out to get a pizza by early afternoon since we hadn’t a moment to eat earlier, and we were starving by then!<br /></div><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Here are a few photos of the day:</span><br /></div><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpJF1cu0icw2FZEY3EhomiGJOgkSeJvO6C5CP45-9AA9Gd9U7nSvpnJHhha_oVabrQddl2TU_UxbCQFTAtuENNzrXM9I61ArdcjrnJvLHOeyxCyS8N994hp2D5BWPYXozJbk_3qjUL1q9p/s1600-h/S7300569.JPG.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpJF1cu0icw2FZEY3EhomiGJOgkSeJvO6C5CP45-9AA9Gd9U7nSvpnJHhha_oVabrQddl2TU_UxbCQFTAtuENNzrXM9I61ArdcjrnJvLHOeyxCyS8N994hp2D5BWPYXozJbk_3qjUL1q9p/s400/S7300569.JPG.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5245844585416140290" border="0" /></a><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiE0TKlu6JA2hsmf8Vb6IM2gVHaLssTzEr6PxE6lstL0i99gtBeHeZb1DTP8v5fMnc-g03QrUvPbQo_Bx3GygznVcaWjTzTpS4ZoopdULJ_5HjyL5Jo00tAABPo1cBFCtA3wZdxm9BV4Pwj/s1600-h/S7300567.JPG.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiE0TKlu6JA2hsmf8Vb6IM2gVHaLssTzEr6PxE6lstL0i99gtBeHeZb1DTP8v5fMnc-g03QrUvPbQo_Bx3GygznVcaWjTzTpS4ZoopdULJ_5HjyL5Jo00tAABPo1cBFCtA3wZdxm9BV4Pwj/s400/S7300567.JPG.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5245844586456752898" border="0" /></a><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjw7CGPzr2FH1g6KgT-CBGB4XkYkiZqGV9BGuFU98zj5pWVH8tuO8cnpSsu-Vd-Ey1X0BBmbnB2-X98Q6FyhQwEJoZdv0Fx0iWiitAQriT_gjTYZz4YwHSXbLth8OnbamqG8q1VFFA_UgkE/s1600-h/S7300574.JPG.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjw7CGPzr2FH1g6KgT-CBGB4XkYkiZqGV9BGuFU98zj5pWVH8tuO8cnpSsu-Vd-Ey1X0BBmbnB2-X98Q6FyhQwEJoZdv0Fx0iWiitAQriT_gjTYZz4YwHSXbLth8OnbamqG8q1VFFA_UgkE/s400/S7300574.JPG.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5245844592491509682" border="0" /></a><span style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51);font-size:85%;" >My three sons were great helpers!!</span><br /><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgf1GREvjzz1kJRPUr9Oc69t_7-5R3IHFrRwjfcVx8PJQVOgjDBNU2bWO8kd7DthZUEJA2Yl-9VOk91o7H2cIWBJ0BMKEYVyAlGlhrXkCnAv_8VaIwmSKu60doUHNbFQHGimw97X_RcZMx/s1600-h/S7300566.JPG.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgf1GREvjzz1kJRPUr9Oc69t_7-5R3IHFrRwjfcVx8PJQVOgjDBNU2bWO8kd7DthZUEJA2Yl-9VOk91o7H2cIWBJ0BMKEYVyAlGlhrXkCnAv_8VaIwmSKu60doUHNbFQHGimw97X_RcZMx/s400/S7300566.JPG.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5245844588932255538" border="0" /></a><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4J0fZDyyIXvJXMdDh8HRI4x9ci6KhuD9LK75XZ4EIyMP0ayW0uTkbrZjyNPy5s13FJXa4v0ZbSrjjC6cVAN9JkOc2RBXhmAmO0KUJ8MDiurSvPWBtNB2maYgt74Lh-U6VEcUsLbACFD8x/s1600-h/S7300565.JPG.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4J0fZDyyIXvJXMdDh8HRI4x9ci6KhuD9LK75XZ4EIyMP0ayW0uTkbrZjyNPy5s13FJXa4v0ZbSrjjC6cVAN9JkOc2RBXhmAmO0KUJ8MDiurSvPWBtNB2maYgt74Lh-U6VEcUsLbACFD8x/s400/S7300565.JPG.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5245841107033163506" border="0" /></a><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Some of my best sales for day 1 were a carnival glass footed bowl, a box lot of audio books on tape, and a new-in-the-box tire clock! Here’s a list of some of the items I’ll have on my front lawn for sale.<br /><br />There will be a lot of sporting goods and sneakers! I purchased a huge lot from a dealer at the auction who had bought the contents of a sporting goods store that was closing. What I have left — after putting the bulk of it on eBay — are Nike cleats for adults and kids, Pony sneakers for boys in sizes 1 — 3, close to a dozen football helmets with the face masks, new in the box hockey helmets, football and hockey shoulder pads, padded hockey pants, shin pads, shoulder & elbow pads for kids, and lots of hockey skate laces. I also have a new pair of men’s roller blades. Then I have a few collectable bobblehead figures for baseball lovers and a couple of Disney Mickey Mouse football bobble-heads for different teams. For clothing, there are a few shirts and shorts by Reebok — new with tags!! These look like they’d be great for bicyclists, snug fitting Play-Dry fabric. The <a href="http://avenuestosold.blogspot.com/2008/07/get-ready-for-4th-annual-mammoth-moosup.html">4th Annual Mammoth Moosup Neighborhood Yard Sale</a>.<br /><br />I’ve recently become a resident of this area, so guess what? I’ll be selling.<br /><br />That means I’ve been scoping out items around my home to be included in the yard sale. Beyond that, I have a ton of leftover merchandise I purchased in lots over the last two years to sell on <a style="font-weight: bold;" href="http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQsassZkatelynsattic">eBay</a>! As it turns out, not everything you might guess will sell well online, does.<br /><br />For me and all of my neighbors in Moosup, it’s a great time to combat Pack Rat Disease — and for anyone else who may be planning a yard sale, it’s time to get organized! Gather anything in your home that hasn’t been used within the past year. Items may be “still good” or “worth keeping”, but not if you’re not going to use it! No more “saving it for someday” while you struggle to find what you need in over-packed closets. If you have children, think about toys that aren’t being used and any clothing that may have been outgrown. Last Spring, my husband and I separated. For the first time in my adult life, I’m on my own -- with three children at home. In August, my car was hit in the rear by an uninsured driver. Then as of yesterday, my position with the newspaper was eliminated, and I am now without a job.<br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />That’s a lot to handle within a few months’ time.<br /><br />While it’s been difficult for sure, there’s one thing I’ve found that’s been truly wonderful and amazing. It’s family. And those people who care, they've really come through!<br /><br />When I first moved into my own place, funds were short and the oil tank was empty. My elderly grandfather and my mother both helped to get me a delivery.<br /><br />When after splitting up a household, I didn’t have a few basics... Some of those things came from the most unexpected sources. (Thank you!!)<br /><br />My oldest daughter is 17. I’m very proud of her. She goes to school, cheerleads, and holds a job. With my work schedule, I wasn’t always available to drive her where she needed to go, when she needed to get there. She has her driver’s license, but there was no way in my situation that I could have bought her a car.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUK3PYYjoudPugICB-7N17jMP_Msy3YmjOPyApf_Ih3J_HGNz4MsPsEts0-VR1EwAS3-NGBiiip680MH1Vk98E2E0TCV6FTJnwnz3m-bhlXmLq1Muq-UYMZDbUR6sIORpSxdGKI-DvQfKW/s1600-h/luminak.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 129px; height: 129px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUK3PYYjoudPugICB-7N17jMP_Msy3YmjOPyApf_Ih3J_HGNz4MsPsEts0-VR1EwAS3-NGBiiip680MH1Vk98E2E0TCV6FTJnwnz3m-bhlXmLq1Muq-UYMZDbUR6sIORpSxdGKI-DvQfKW/s200/luminak.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5242710868890484722" border="0" /></a>Kayla had been estranged from her father. They hadn’t spoken in a very long time. But he spotted a decent car with a sign on it on the side of the road and checked it out. With some of Kayla’s savings and help and contributions from various relatives (along with a bit of haggling to get the price down as low as possible!) — through a true combination of efforts — Kayla now has a car and she drives herself to school and work.<br /><br />Especially wonderful: Her older brother, who at 22 is now living on his own and struggling to make ends meet himself, contributed towards the cost of Kayla’s car. And her step-father — he generously put four new tires on it to ensure her safety.<br /><br />The added plus — Kayla and her father are speaking again.<br /><br />Certainly, smart shopping your “<a href="http://bargainavenues.com/">Bargain Avenues</a>” can make things easier for those on tight budgets. Finding quality second-hand clothing at thrift stores, searching out great deals on eBay, and knowing how to identify sellable collectibles at garage & yard sales can help to stretch dollars.<br /></div><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-style: italic; color: rgb(153, 0, 0);">And while finding a great price on gas today in RI was terrific...</span><br /></div><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdheecoPe-_xLFzEFq13imtikFwRBCVsTuTHJNx35yuG_mzuHfWwIc-vshEVjAReHbycCiz6kh-jL-6kLBx4TX2MV55qkseAFdBTE9PKGhoJ5Q0UdxuC6e7wpM1Vy5wRI3TaR6BrjQho66/s1600-h/kaygas.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdheecoPe-_xLFzEFq13imtikFwRBCVsTuTHJNx35yuG_mzuHfWwIc-vshEVjAReHbycCiz6kh-jL-6kLBx4TX2MV55qkseAFdBTE9PKGhoJ5Q0UdxuC6e7wpM1Vy5wRI3TaR6BrjQho66/s320/kaygas.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5242713537924784882" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(153, 0, 0);">KEEP IN MIND:</span> Our most precious assets are not likely to be found at a gas pump or hidden inside a plastic storage bin at the flea market...<br /></div><br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-yyBglGNaJ7aiYDD2AWqr0RSYw6bvqfTypNhb5EgiRgLQJSADRK0E1Aq5zY9QoSDn9pwVLyXYSsopPkuA5pGTW_ZyR1M8utJkBa01RoOXgmr8gEPKlwRlYQwJ_blrKMzUl2YuojfwHaM4/s1600-h/momkids.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-yyBglGNaJ7aiYDD2AWqr0RSYw6bvqfTypNhb5EgiRgLQJSADRK0E1Aq5zY9QoSDn9pwVLyXYSsopPkuA5pGTW_ZyR1M8utJkBa01RoOXgmr8gEPKlwRlYQwJ_blrKMzUl2YuojfwHaM4/s320/momkids.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5242715761771409794" border="0" /></a><span style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51);font-size:85%;" >My mom and my kids</span><br /><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">What is most valuable in our lives is all around us.
